Reflecting on Week 1 of Training: A Slow Start and New Gear

As I sit down to reflect on the first week of my training block and with only 18 kilometers logged, it’s safe to say that this week didn’t reach any great heights. I was away in Cheltenham for work, so missed my usual Pubrun staple and as usual, just found myself bogged down with work and life.

However, amidst the setbacks, there’s always something to glean, and for me, it was the acquisition of a new kit! Running poles are somewhat of a novelty for me. I’ve seen others use them on the trails, effortlessly navigating steep ascents and descents with grace. So, when I decided to invest in a pair, I knew there would be a learning curve. Yet, I’m eager to embrace the challenge and incorporate them into my training regimen.

I ended up going with the Harrier Helvellyn PRO Carbon Z-Poles which seem like a nice bit of kit and come with rave reviews from a couple of people I trust on the topic.

Despite the lackluster mileage, the rig is feeling pretty good, and I’ve started to go to a regular Monday stretching and cardio session for runners. I’ll keep it up along side my running.

Now, let’s take a closer look at the data from this week:

Key MetricsNumbers
Weight (kg)99 kg
Distance Ran (km)18 km
Days Before August 17th160 days
Vertical Gain (m)185m

As we can see from the table above, while the mileage may not have been impressive, there are still areas of improvement to focus on. I’m confident that the upcoming weeks will bring about progress and growth.

Here’s to a better week 2!
