RC Pythons march on
Last Thursday the RC Pythons faced off against the Players in the second last week of the regular season at Ryan’s Reserve International Netball Stadium. This was also our last game under #thursdaynightlights as daylight savings ticked across on the weekend.
With 4 huge outs this week, (Larritt – living the Adelaide dream, Alanna – on the gas with work, Laura – black eye from social soccer, Langerak – lack of passion for the Pythons) the Pythons brought in 2015 Fill in Queen Joey Jenson, Laura Davies and ex premiership hero Fed Kaso to sure up the ranks. We went into the game keen for a win but also keen to have some fun and re-find our passion for the game of Netball.
We started strongly jumping out to a lead so by the time the second quarter rolled around, we were confident to throw WA Elle Smart into shooter to ensure she registers some shooting stats for the season. After a wobbly start, Elle managed to drain 2 from 7 on the quarter, highlighted by a loopy bomb from 5 feet followed by a Lleyton Hewitt esque fist pump from Elle. Parker was coming off a standout performance playing for the Vipers the game before where unconfirmed reports suggest she shot 100% for the game and got them over the line vs a spirited Serpents team. Parker ended up shooting 11/15 on the night for the Pythons in another dominant shooting performance.
Jen has been spending significant time in her active wear this week and the fatigue showed when Coach Baron put her into shooter for the third quarter, Jen showed glimpses of the shooter she once was (when she was eleven) getting herself into perfect shooting position, shooting arch looked good, stance is perfect but unfortunately managed to shoot 0/7 for the quarter.
Maria was the only player that played a consistent position this week and continues to dominate the mid court with pinpoint passing and a career high 4 clean interceptions. Who needs Alanna anyway?
One week to go before finals, tough game this week against the RC Serpents. Jess will be playing a quarter at shooter to ensure we get some stats on the board for her.
A reminder that the Sandy Robertson Medal is up for grabs and is presented in a similar way to the Brownlow medal is in AFL. Each week the Pythons players vote 3/2/1 for the best on ground and totals are kept secret till our Pythons awards night. Voting counts through both the regular season and the finals series.
What we learnt:
- Elle fancies herself as a shooter – and has the most fun when playing four positions in four quarters.
- Jess loves her snake babies and Adelaide is not for her.
- Pythons are selective with their fill in’s
- Melbourne Netball needs to work on live streaming the Pythons games we have so many fans worldwide.
- Fed’s still got it after all these years
- Kiwis have huge tickers (Joey can play three games in a row no worries)
- Parker loves GD
- 3 more wins and we go one better than Michael Jordan ever did
