How to run a Marathon in 6 weeks
Ten minutes ago, I pulled the trigger and am now running the Melbourne Marathon 2015. I’ve been talking smack about it for a while, in fact, I had convinced (bullshitted) the boys at work that I’d signed up about 3 months ago. Today though, with 6 weeks, 4 days and 2 minutes till the gun goes off, I pulled the trigger.
Over the next 6 weeks you’ll be able to follow along as I go from basically no running, to running the Melbourne Marathon.
One of the guys at work said it would be good to do a fundraiser, for once in my life, I agreed with him, so I have setup a sponsorship page to try and raise $700 over the next 6 weeks.
The organisation I have chosen to receive the money is Spinal Muscular Atrophy Australia. The reason I have chosen them is because about 4 years ago, I discovered a bloke online by the name of Mike Pulman, who himself has Spinal muscular atrophy and has been an inspiration to me over the last four years with his attitude and persistence despite his obvious limitations and who continues to do great things with his journalism, blogging and breaking down of barriers for those with degenerative diseases. Mikes blog can be found here at “The Real Michael Pulman”
What are you thinking Malcolm?
Why?
I always said I would do a Marathon by 30, I’m going to be about a year late but that’s fine, I had also planned on being a millionaire by 30 and it looks like I’ll be about 20 years late on that one so one year late isn’t too bad.
State of me now?
At the moment I’ve been doing pretty well with my health, largely thanks to Maria’s positive influences. I probably average about one alcoholic beverage a week; I have been working out at Skulpt Personal Training in Richmond 4 times a week on strength and HITT based stuff. I also played a little Hockey this season and walk to and from work each day (around 5km each way)
How am I feeling?
I’ve got a huge ticker, so I should be fine. The main thing I need to do between now and 6 weeks’ time is put some serious mileage in the legs so they get used to the pain of running for a long time at once. I’m feeling confident and comfortable about the decision. A good opportunity to reaffirm my status as Alpha male in the workplace.
Base Stats:
Fitbit Steps per week: 170 thousand steps per week average. (That’s pretty high)
Weight: 96 kg approx.
How far can I run without issue: About two months ago, I ran 15km on a Saturday night with my CIO.
Longest run I’ve ever done: Two years ago I was doing the 15km City to Sea run but didn’t realise that trams didn’t run that early in the morning on a Sunday so had to run 6km from home to the start line. Meaning I did about 21km on the day.
Get around me.
Go for it Mal – so impressed!
